Bootblack Contest Categories & Scoring

Open Shine:  60 points (40%). ​

Friday March 17 between 6-7pm & then from 9p - approximately 1030p (except for those times contestants are  participating in opening ceremonies).

Contestants offer bootblacking services to Judges and other event-goers.

This category is weighted the highest because it most closely reflects how the winner will conduct him/her/them(self) during their title year.

Qualities to observe or experience are: skills, knowledge, chair management, personality, and appropriate level of professionalism &/or (if negotiated by boot-wearer & bootblack) eroticism.

Judges may award any amount of points for each contestant, as they determine.

​Interview:  30 points (20%)

Saturday March 18th from 10-11:15am at the World Beat Center.

Contestants will be interviewed by the judging panel.

Bootblack interviews are open to the public.

Judging panel will have a maximum of 20 minutes to interview each contestant on their knowledge of bootblacking, bootblack history, accomplishments, mentors or any other relevant subject.​​

Tech Boot:  30 points (20%)

Saturday March 18th from 12pm-12:45pm at the World Beat Center.

Contestants are tasked with revitalizing & shining a boot randomly selected from entries to showcase their technical skills for judges to compare against the work of other bootblacks, using the un-touched boot from the pair as additional reference.

Speech:  15 points (10%)

Saturday March 19th between 7:00 - 9:00 pm during contest at the World Beat Center.

Contestants give a speech on a subject of their choosing within the area of bootblacking to take place on stage. (90 seconds max). 

Bootblack Sole:  15 points (10%)

Observation starts Friday at the Open Shine during Meet & Greet and ends Saturday after contest categories are finished.

Contestants answer a light-hearted pop-question on stage during the Saturday Contest.

Judges observe and award points for subjective factors like personality, professionalism, demeanor, passion, and appearance.

Judges are to place emphasis on those times the bootblack is engaging with the public socially, on stage, or at their respective stands and to avoid having the interview or tech boot portion influence their evaluations in this category.
